2024 Beyond Type1 & Steven Cannady 5k

Today was my first time running in support of the Type 1D cause. Well, it was the inaugural event, so everyone else was the first time running this event. I found this event via the Strava group Team Breakthrough T1D, previously known as JDRF Org.

After an easy 1-mile jog, give the legs and knee a chance to get loose before the start of the event.

It was a small event, maybe a total of 20-25 runners. It was still great to see many runners in support of a great cause. This event was on a Tuesday, so I did not had much time left after the event as I needed to get back to work.

Miles 1

As I started way with the group top 6-7 runners sprinted away from the start. The first quarter and last miles were around the parking area of Microsoft building. Soon after that we got into the sidewalk. With such a small event we has a single streetlight crosswalk, were the 1st 4 runners were able to continue to run, while some of us had to wait for the traffic to stop for us. I was able to start passing a few runners.

Miles 2

I felt like I was able to warm up. The temperatures were fantastic, and today, we had some great cloud coverage protecting us from the sun. There were some rolling hills. I pass another runner and I knew now that I am in 5th position, with my eyes on the runner in front, which was about 300m ahead of me. I held steady on the pace, but also aware that behind me at the moment was another runner trying to catch up.

Miles 3-finish

In the last mile, I was tackling the hills with ease at the same pace or increasing the cadence a little bit. But I knew it was going to be impossible to move up to 4th place, as by now the runner in front was more than 400m ahead and there was not much left to run. I hold steady, with complete aware of the runner behind, now a little bit more far behind. I was able to finish, not necessary a great pace, but I was happy to be able to push the pace given that it has been a long time since I have raced a 5k and just started a couple of months back with some speed runs.
