Journey to a 100: Week 9/26: Runner Profile

This is part of a series of posts regarding how the InaseRunning group prepares, plans, and trains to complete the 100 miles Ultramarathon Umstead 100: Journey to a 100. For all the ultrarunning series, here is Road to 100 last week’s post, and for additional ideas, follow the link. Training for a 100.

Runner Profile:

This next 100 milers InsaneRunning training group participant is as well known as our previous runner that we profiled last week. Mister Kaleel Rahiman Mohammed will be tackling Umstead 100 this coming April. I met Kaleel sometime ago when I saw Kaleel running many of the same events I have run in the last few years. But it was only when we ran together in one of those encounters during a long run at the American Tobacco Trail that I had the opportunity to have a great conversation and got to know him and his running adventures better. Kaleel has completed a multitude of events, including several Marathons and already a few Ultramarathons. I also had the privilege to have him as the last pacer for this year’s Umstead 100, where he, as a great pacer, was able to help me achieve my goal of completing the event within my goals.

What got you into running long distances?

Inspiration came from local runners on the Tobacco trail.  Initially, running a marathon was a dream, but now my dream has come true, giving me the confidence to move to a new dream of running a marathon in each state.

What do you love about running?

Spending quality, fruitful time with friends on trails

What have you learned about yourself because of running?

Trying to continue to learn about healthy lifestyle eating and better fitness habits.

What is your favorite distance?

The Marathon & Ultra

What advice would you provide to a new runner?

To start slow, studying the sport & consistency in training is key

What made you decide to tackle Umstead 100?

The Umstead 100, 1st we knew all from our best running buddy, friend, and coach, Carlos. I was initially a pacer, and then with Carlos’s inspiration, I am now attempting 100 miles as a runner.

What are your goals for this event?

To complete 100 miles in 24hrs.

Any other additional recommendations or ideas for runners out there?

To join some local training run groups with a 16 weeks plan, attempt some decent local races, half marathons, and full marathons, and train hard so you can then race easily.

Kaleel is always ready to help and provide great conversations during the many long run miles. Even when sometimes it is trying to get us running in some unrunnable trails.

How is the plan going:

Summary: This week was another good solid mileage week. Coming from a 50k event last weekend and with an event on Saturday followed by a long run on Sunday, this is where we can start testing the legs and practice running on super tired legs.

Monday: A visit to the gym with a one-mile warm-up

Tuesday: Easy 8 miler

Wednesday: Slept in the morning, followed by a five-easy run with the InsaneRunning Group.

Thursday: Three miles easy pace

Friday: Gym visit with 1-mile warm-up.

Saturday: 1 mile Warm up, followed by Durham Race 13.1 event and a cool down mile.

Sunday: Met with the InsaneRunners at Umstead for a 15-mile loop. With easy initial miles and ending with a 3-mile effort push resulting in another fastest mile with my Enduro. Very happy with the effort.
