Training for 100 miles: Road to 100: Week 11/16

This is part of a series of posts regarding how I am preparing, planning, and train to complete the 100 miles Ultramarathon Umstead 100: Road to 100. For all the ultrarunning series here is Road to 100 last week’s post and for additional ideas follow the link. Training for a 100.

If you are following the progress and have looked at the overall plan, this week is one of those weeks to add mileage to the back-to-back runs. Second to the last set of weeks of increasing before start tapering. Next week is a much-needed recovery week. By now you should have pretty much an idea of what is to come. You have already battled a few demons and question the reasoning of why you signed up for a 100-mile race.

Now it is time to hone in on the few additional details that could make your event experience better and more enjoyable.

Assessment:

What are those things that are not working out 100%?

Have you considered backup plans?

Are you missing anything? Think about what could go wrong or what will be nice to have.

Start your mental rehear of what is going to happen and the actions you need to take. For me, 8 loops mean preparing 7-8 kits for an easy, quick, but most importantly brain ease transition at the finish of each loop.

Planning:

There are many resources with tips and tricks, are there any you could use?

  • Here you can find a few ideas and recomendations for the training run as well as the event. Training for 100 miles: It is all about the details.
  • Jeff Pelletier shares excellent Trail Running Gear Tips & Hacks that you can use for your long distance event, especially trail events. Some of those which I have used successfully in the past.
  • What items you need to get ready? Zip-Locks, Tape, Glide, Head-Lamp(s), charger, batteries, mat, other?

How is the plan going:

This week was another solid week. The workweek mileage was decent, here are some highlights,

Monday: Semi-recovery day, some Yoga and strength work

Tuesday run: Easy run

Wednesday run: Easy audiobook run

Thursday run: Some speed work 6x Yassos (800m)

Friday: Very light recovery Yoga

The long runs were good too, Saturday: Was a very good long run at Umstead. Sugars were high for the most part which made the effort a little bit harder compared to last week’s long runs.

Sunday: Fantastic weather today, completed a few extra miles to cap the weekend with a total of 50. SUgars held pretty well, fuel worked better, not perfect but better. I was able to address a low sugar trend early enough to be able to sustain the effort levels and pace.
