Running Shorts: Fundamental Shift

“Many people experience a fundamental shift in thinking when they face a life-threatening crisis and suddenly see their priorities in a different light or when they suddenly step into a new role such as that of husband or wife, parent or grandparent, manager or leader.”
As a runner, these fundamental shift experiences could come from personal experiences like it happened for me at the Raleigh Rock and Roll 2014, or from watching others during training runs or events. For example, if we are running an event, with warm temperatures, humid and a high sun pounding, we might start pushing our bodies to the extreme. As performance starts to suffer, we might think mind over matter, and try to push our bodies even harder. There might be nothing wrong with doing that, but when you start seeing other runners stopping and barely walking. Also, when you see a couple other runners that were laying on the ground due to the heat and/or exhaustion it might be time to rethink, to have a fundamental shift. The kind of shift in which you will need to ease the pace and perhaps let go the main targets or goals for this time. Sometimes to the point of stopping to help that runner, either to help him/her stand from the ground or to make sure the person gets help he needs.
